Mitchell Caverns State Park

Mitchell Caverns State Park is a recreational area in the Providence Mountains of Southern California. It features a trio of limestone caves open to guided tours, including Tecopa and El Pakiva.

The park offers a unique opportunity to explore the only examples of limestone caverns inside the State Parks of California. Caves of Mitchell are a fascinating group of three limestone caves in Southern California’s Providence Mountains State Recreation Area. Ranger-led tours provide access to two caverns, called “Tecopa” and “El Pakiva,” joined by a manufactured tube.

The beautiful stalactites and stalagmites that decorate the caves can be seen up close on these trips. However, due to its danger, the third cave, the “Winding Stair,” is off-limits to the public and rarely used as a training site for cave rescue teams. Mitchell’s Caverns are particularly noteworthy because they are the only caverns made of limestone in the State Parks of California.
