Pacheco State Park
Pacheco State Park is the remaining part of El Rancho San Luis Gonzaga, an original Mexican land grant. Awarded in 1843, it holds historical significance as the site of Merced County’s first home. The land was passed down through the Pacheco family for five generations before Paula Fatjo, Francisco Pacheco’s great-great-granddaughter, donated it in 1992 to be used as a park for those who share her passion for animals, horseback riding, history, and preserving natural areas.
This property, a ranch for horses and cattle since 1843, is known for its breathtaking views over the Central and Santa Clara Valley. Several historic buildings, such as the original Pacheco adobe and a line shack used by Henry Miller’s cattle enterprise in the 1800s, have been preserved in the park for future generations. The renewable electricity produced by the farm’s wind turbines is enough to provide 3,500 dwellings. While the park spans 6,890 acres, only the western 2,600 are accessible to the general public.

The park’s diversified environment supports a variety of plants and species. The ranch in Pacheco State Park is home to cattle during the winter and spring, adding to the park’s natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. It’s the perfect place to take in the splendours of nature and meet some of the world’s most fascinating creatures.
Camping AT Pacheco State Park
Pacheco State Park does not allow camping outside of planned events; however, that’s what they have in San Luis State Park. Pacheco State Park does not have access to clean water at this time. However, several of the park’s lakes do provide horse-friendly water. The San Luis State Recreation Area, located nearby, has campsites and all the essential services for campers. It provides campers with the conveniences they need to relax and enjoy the outdoors without sacrificing any of the amenities they might need.
Trails At Pacheco State Park
Pacheco State Park is an interesting place to visit because of its various attractions. The park becomes a vivid and gorgeous landscape in the spring thanks to the abundance of wildflowers.
Outstanding routes in the park are perfect for equestrian riding, hiking, and mountain biking and offer stunning panoramas for park visitors. With over 28 miles of trails, there is something for hikers of all experience levels and tastes. Pacheco State Park is a fantastic destination for hikers and campers looking for various outdoor activities, from simple strolls to multi-day expeditions.
