Boggs Mountain State Forest

Boggs Mountain State Forest

Boggs Mountain State Forest is a state forest that covers the northwest side of Boggs Mountain in Lake County, California. This woodland was purchased in 1949 from a private landowner. Most of the Forest’s usable timber had been cut down by then. Boggs Mountain Demonstration State Forest is located in southern Lake County, seven miles northwest of Middletown and eight miles south of Clear Lake.

All about 75 air miles north of San Francisco and 50 miles inland from the Pacific coast. There are two mountain ranges, one to the north and one to the south, that form the boundaries of the Forest. Much of Boggs Mountain’s nearly 3,500 acres are covered in exposed volcanic rock, revealing the mountain’s complicated geology.

Nature of Boggs Mountain State Forest

About 80 of the property’s mature trees and 95 of the understory regeneration were destroyed when the Valley Fire swept through in September 2015. Salvage logging operations over the entire Forest have been conducted as part of reforestation efforts to recoup the economic value of the ruined wood.

Most of the trees perished in the fire, but the timber was still usable, so it was cut down and transported to the nearby sawmill. The forestry project included over 3,100 acres, with 702,695 tree seedlings planted there. Trees like the Giant Sequoia and Incense Cedar were among those introduced.
