Smithe Redwoods State Reserve
Smithe Redwoods State Reserve is a park in Mendocino County, California. In the early 20th century, Mulford Miller and W. A. S. Foster purchased the property, and by 1940, W. S. Ware and Lester Goble had owned it.
The region had cabins, a shop, a post office, and a bus station when it was still called Lane’s Redwood Flat. Parks and Recreation Division, State of California, took control of the land in 1963, preventing its sale to a logging firm. The park features a waterfall, areas for river activity, and picnicking along the South Fork Eel River.
The stunning Frank and Bess Smithe Grove of Redwoods is in the Smithe Redwoods State Natural Reserve. A private resort once stood here. Park is on Eel River’s southern fork, which runs through it and has a picnic area, a 60-foot waterfall, and fishing and swimming. Highway 101 lay four miles to the north of Leggett lay the reserve.
