Canyon de Chelly National Monument
Canyon de Chelly National Monument was established in 1931 to preserve ancient archaeological resources spanning over 4,100 years. On the Navajo Nation, the monument encompasses over 84,000 acres, and some residents make their homes there. The National Park Service and the Navajo Nation work together to keep this special location pristine.
One of the oldest continuously inhabited places on the Colorado Plateau; people have been living in these canyons for around 5,000 years. Ancient structures and images found in the canyons preserve their histories. Families of Navajo people now live, farm, and raise cattle in these gorges.
