Colusa-Sacramento River State Recreation Area
Colusa-Sacramento River State Recreation Area is a beautiful outdoor destination located in California. It is situated along the banks of the Sacramento Valley, and the bank offers a range of activities for nature enthusiasts. Formerly occupied by the River Patwin Indian tribe, the area was first visited by non-Native Americans in 1872, when John Muir stayed nearby. This area served as Colusa’s landfill from the early 20th century until 1955.
The city of Colusa gave the land of around seven and a half acres to the state of California in 1955. More property was added after this, filled, leveled, cleared, and manicured to make a lovely space. The park is a popular place for families to visit, and the river is a focal point for activities there. The availability of a ramp suitable for launching small boats is good news for boating enthusiasts.

Campsites, picnic areas, and a boat ramp are all available to guests in this locale. Cottonwoods and willows line the riverbank of one of California’s best fishing spots, where anglers may reel in rainbow trout, striped bass, steelhead, and king salmon. Numerous bird species in the Pacific Flyway use the river as a resting place and a passageway.

Most people go bird watching in hopes of spotting migratory waterbirds, but other species, such as ring-necked pheasants, California quail, mallard ducks, Canada geese, western meadowlarks, northern flickers, and ospreys, can be spotted at other times the year. Colusa-Sacramento River State Recreation Area is only about 14 acres in size. Thus, there are few trails to explore there. Nonetheless, the nature trail to the left of the boat ramp is a great place to take in the scenery and relax after a day on the water. Walking along the Sacramento River’s banks is another option, as is exploring the quaint shops and restaurants in nearby Colusa.

This section of California’s greatest river, the Sacramento, is a mecca for anglers seeking striped bass; rainbow trout, king salmon, and steelhead are the types of available fish.
In addition to this, Anglers regularly reel in catches of sturgeon, carp, shad, and catfish. Salmon spawn between September and October. They are also catchable from November through January, albeit with less success due to the higher water levels. The peak spring season is from April to June. Late August through late October is prime steelhead season.

When you visit the Colusa-Sacramento River State Recreation Area, you can take your boat out on the Sacramento River any time of year. On the river’s western bank, there’s a tiny boat launch that you can utilize. If you have a large boat, you’ll need to find another place to launch it because this one is only suitable for smaller vessels.
While the park does not provide boat rentals, visitors can ask the helpful staff for recommendations on where to find such services in the surrounding area.

Many people who visit the Colusa-Sacramento River State Recreation Area stay for a picnic after their river activities. There is a five-acre picnic spot in the park that is peacefully tree-shaded. There are barbecue grills, a bathroom, and water/hot showers available in the picnic area. The picnic area is very crowded in the summer, so come if you want to experience the excitement.
