History of Conway Cemetery State Park
Conway Cemetery State Park is an 11.5-acre historic place in Lafayette County, Arkansas. It remembers James Sevier Conway, Arkansas’s first governor and a very important person in the state’s early years. The park protects his family plot, which is on his old cotton plantation called Walnut Hill. Conway was from Tennessee and moved to Arkansas in 1829 to work as a surveyor. He was a very important part of measuring the state’s borders, and President Andrew Jackson made him the surveyor of the Territory of Arkansas. The cemetery is close to where Conway’s plantation home was, and the park is a tribute to his life.
