Fort Ord Dunes State Park
Fort Ord Dunes State Park, located just south of Marina State Beach, is a new addition to California’s state parks. Its main purpose is to protect the nearby dunes and beaches. The park offers a secluded beach at the base of natural bluffs, perfect for beachcombing and relaxation.
The demolition of Stilwell Hall, an officers’ club, made way for a parking lot. Fort Ord, a former military base in use until 1991, now serves as a national monument with walking paths and open grassy fields. This freshly built state park features four miles of beachfront and breathtaking views of Monterey Bay and may be reached by descending 1,500 feet.
To protect the park’s infrastructure, visitors should always stick to the marked trails and roadways. Leashed dogs are only allowed on public sidewalks and highways. No horses or campfires are allowed on the beach. Fort Ord Dunes State Park, stretching over 979 acres along Monterey Bay, offers a pristine, undeveloped coastal experience. The park is home to a diverse range of plant species, some of which are endangered. One highlight is spotting the rare Smith’s Blue Butterfly.
