Izembek National Wildlife Refuge

Izembek National Wildlife Refuge is one of Alaska’s most ecologically different refuges despite being the smallest of the state’s refuges at 315,000 acres. The refuge also holds the distinction of being the state’s smallest refuge. The majority of the refuge, which is around 300,000 acres in size and was protected as wilderness in 1980 under the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act, was designated as such by the federal government.
