Jacksonport State Park

Jacksonport State Park

Jacksonport became a thriving river port to the expansion of the steamboat industry in the 1800s. Due to its strategic importance during the Civil War, the town was occupied by Confederate and Union forces. When Jacksonport was designated the county seat in 1854, work began on a magnificent brick courthouse that would eventually rise to two stories. The town’s fortunes, however, fell once the railroad decided to go around it in the 1880s.

When the county seat was relocated to Newport in 1891, Jacksonport lost its shoreline and commercial establishments. The Mary Woods No. 2 sternwheel paddleboat and the 1872 courthouse are just two of the museums and instructive programs that provide visitors a glimpse into the past of this once-thriving river port.
