As a national monument, Kenai Fjords National Park was created in 1978. It was designated a national park in 1980 to protect the Harding Icefield, the fjord and rainforest habitats, the abundant wildlife, and the historical and archaeological remnants. The Kenai Peninsula is home to Kenai Fjords National Park. A fantastic starting point for visiting the Kenai Fjords is the town of Seward, which is located just outside the park.

Drive Off Of Glacier Road At Kenai Fjords National Park
Seward and Exit Glacier are connected by Exit Glacier Road, also known as Herman Leirer Road. 8.5 miles make up this road. Four-digit road signs with numbers will be seen as you cross the Kenai Fjords National Park border. The numerals on these markers denote the year the Exit Glacier terminus existed in each location they mark. How much this glacier has receded over the past 100 years may be seen. The main theory behind this is that climate change is to blame.

One of the most enjoyable activities in Kenai Fjords National Park is fjord cruising. This is one of the best national parks for wildlife viewing, with spectacular vistas and an unforgettable opportunity to come close to glaciers. There are various alternatives when selecting a fjord cruise. Depending on the tour, these last a half and a full day. You can take a shorter excursion that stays close to Seward or spend the entire day cruising to farther-flung fjords. The experience gets better the further away you are from Seward.
