Kobuk Valley National Park
Kobuk Valley National Park, in the western Brooks Range above the Arctic Circle, is a large valley encircled by the Baird and Waring mountain ranges, with the Kobuk River running through it for 61 miles. Northwestern Alaska’s Kobuk Valley National Park lies 25 miles north of the Arctic Circle. It’s US-protected. In 1980, the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act created the park.
The southern portion is notable for its arid dunes. The 25-square-mile Great Kobuk Sand Dunes are 100 feet tall. Wind and water brought glacier-worn sand here after the previous Ice Age. Permafrost and fossils blanket Little Kobuk and Hunt River dunes’ sandy river cliffs. Kobuk Valley National Park protects the 25-square-mile Great, Little, and Hunt River Sand Dunes.

The park is notable for the almost 25 square miles that the Great Kobuk Sand Dunes take up. Located in an extremely rare location inside the Arctic Circle, these enormous dunes can reach heights up to 100 feet. Discovering the dunes is a bizarre experience, as you’ll travel through a desert-like area in the middle of a harsh and uninhabited Arctic region. Sandboarding and sledding are also possible, as is hiking across the dunes and leaving imprints in the powdery sand.
