Kruse Rhododendron State Reserve
Kruse Rhododendron State Reserve is a nature preserve in California, USA. It is known for its many rhododendron blooms and various wildflowers, making for a beautiful and interesting show of flowers for visitors. Next to Salt Point State Park lies Kruse Rhododendron State Reserve. Edward P. Kruse, whose father established the German Bank in San Francisco, gave the land to the state of California in 1933 as a living tribute to him.
The Kruse family began using the area as part of a massive ranch around 1880, where they kept sheep and harvested tanbark and timber. Second-growth redwood, Douglas fir, grand firs, tanoaks, and a profusion of rhododendrons now cover 317 of this reserve’s pristine acres. In May of each year, these magnificent blooms bloom, bringing a splash of vibrant pink to the otherwise dark green of the woodland.
History of Kruse Rhododendron State Reserve
Rhododendrons grew after a devastating fire in this reserve. Regenerated woods are replacing rhododendrons. As forests spread, plants compete for sunlight, water, and nutrients, and the best-suited species dominate until they create circumstances better for other plant communities.
The reserve’s Department of Parks and Recreation slows plant succession to preserve rhododendron blossoms. Thinned tanoak trees and regeneration trimming resurrected rhododendrons have achieved this purpose.
It ensured vigorous new growth and a variety of blooming heights. The rejuvenation project began in the fall of 1979 with few flowers and all above eye level. Tanoaks outcompeted rhododendrons for sunlight, resulting in their rangy growth. Fall 1981 saw the last big pruning. Floral displays increased by 1984.

The peaceful woodland is home to five miles of pathways, one of which is a loop through rhododendron bushes. Wherever there are seasonal streams, you can be sure to find ferns. Salals, Pacific wax myrtle, and California Huckleberry are other understory plants that grow alongside the rhododendrons. Keep to the paths so that new growth can flourish. The trails are not bikeable, and dogs are not permitted. Buses should only utilize the narrow road if there is a turnaround on the narrow road.
