Leslie Canyon National Wildlife Refuge
Leslie Canyon National Wildlife Refuge was created in 1988 and is a significant conservation area in Arizona. Its main goal is to protect the Yaqui Chub and Yaqui Topminnow’s natural habitats, which together cover 2,770 acres. Rare velvet ash, cottonwood, and black walnut gallery forest also call the refuge home.
Leslie Creek, which flows through the refuge between the Swisshelm and Pedregosa Mountains, flows into Whitewater Draw, a branch of the Ro Yaqui. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is working hard in the Leslie Canyon and San Bernardino National Wildlife Refuges to restore and conserve the remaining parts of this once-expansive watershed.
