McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park
McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park is a natural park in California known for its stunning waterfall and beautiful surroundings in the Burney Creek area of Shasta County.
The Memorial Falls at McArthur-Burney Forest, five miles of stream and Lake Shoreline and the Cascade Range and Modoc Plateau are all features of this state park. The park’s centerpiece is Burney Falls, which at 129 feet in height, is neither the tallest nor the biggest waterfall in the state, but is the most attractive.
A hazy pool is created when the spring and the rain mix.
Burney Creek, which flows into Lake Britton and eventually builds up into a
massive waterfall, originates in the underground springs found within the park.
The park receives its daily flow of water, which totals 100 million gallons,
from springs at and above Burney Falls.
History Of McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park
The River of Hell, a Tribe of Native Americans, left a rich legacy in the now McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park area. The indigenous people were driven out by European and American settlers who arrived in the mid-1800s. The park was named for early pioneers John and Catherine McArthur and Samuel Burney, who owned large tracts of land there.
Burney Falls was threatened when Pacific Gas and Electric announced plans to construct hydropower dams down the Pit River. The McArthur family gave the state of California 160 acres in 1920 to be used as a park to ensure the safety of the falls. Damming the Pit River created Lake Britton Reservoir, a popular tourist attraction in the park.
