Mendocino Headlands State Park

Mendocino Headlands State Park

Mendocino Headlands State Park is close to charming downtown Mendocino. The park has grassy headlands and a beach from the Big River mouth south of town. Hikers and joggers love trails. The park hosts winter whale watching weekend animal talks at the Ford Museum. Volunteers run Mendocino’s Ford House on Main Street. Visitor information includes a scale model of 1890 Mendocino. The park, with its gentle trails, rough coastline, quiet beaches, and ageless history, surrounds Mendocino on three sides.

The sea arches and secret grottos along the three kilometres of cliff paths are spectacular. In 1974, when the park was opened, it was a popular destination. In the late 1960s, Mendocino residents proposed the park.

Rumours of a headlands development brought together those who wished to keep it natural. The park buffers Mendocino’s history; there is a wide range of natural, biological, cultural, and social experiences to be had in this town.
