Plumas Eureka State Park
Plumas Eureka State Park offers visitors a chance to experience the fascinating history of California and a peaceful escape to the majestic Sierra Nevada for some R&R. The park was founded in 1959. The park’s primary attraction is its museum and the historic region surrounding it. The museum was once used as the miners’ dormitory and is now open to the public.
The historic mining district in Moriarity House, the stable, the mine office, and the Mohawk Stamp Mill may all be found outside and across the street from the museum. And the blacksmith shop, all of which portray daily life in California during the gold rush. Docents and park employees give tours of the structures and perform blacksmithing demonstrations during the summer months. The park is great for fishing, observing wildlife, and going on a nature hike.
History Of Plumas Eureka State Park
Eureka Peak and the surrounding area were included in the establishment of Plumas Eureka State Park after gold was found in the area. After the discovery of gold on May 23, 1851, many mining companies and shafts were established.
In 1876, the Mohawk stamp mill was constructed as the primary ore-crushing plant; ore was transported to the mill through gravity-powered tramways from deeper mine shafts. Gold Mountain was mined until the 1940s when it was shut down after producing over $8,000,000 in gold. This important piece of gold mining history is now on display at Plumas Eureka State Park.
Fishing At Plumas Eureka State Park
Madora and Eureka lakes and Jamison Creek, which winds through the park, provide excellent fishing. The greatest time to go fishing is typically during May and June. Catching a fish or two in the late evening is possible in the summer.
Rainbow and brown trout can be found in Madora Lake, but only brook trout can be found in Eureka Lake. Jamison Creek has mostly rainbow and brown trout. Golden trout and other species are in mountain streams and lakes accessible in half an hour by car or a 1.5-mile hike.
