Richardson Grove State Park
Richardson Grove State Park is where you first see large, redwood woodland with old-growth trees while travelling north. The park has 170 campsites for families and groups and a day-use picnic spot along the Eel River. The park was established in 1922 and given its current name in honour of Friend W. Richardson, who served as the 25th Governor of California.
Highway 101 and the south branch of the Eel River serve as the dividers that cut it in half. Most of the year is perfect for outdoor pursuits such as camping, hiking, swimming, and unwinding. The winter months are prime time for anglers to pursue salmon and steelhead.
When travelling north, you’ll first see a vast, old-growth redwood forest in Richardson Grove State Park. A walk-through tree, a fallen tree ring study from 1933, and the ninth-biggest coast redwood in the world are all accessible right now. The park hosts various interpretive and educational activities throughout the summer, including nightly campfire presentations, activities for Junior Rangers, and guided nature walks.
