Samuel Penfield Taylor, who traveled from Boston to California during the gold rush era, inspired the park’s name. He struck it rich by mining for gold and then investing in the lumber industry. Taylor purchased 100 acres of forested land along Papermill Creek, where he constructed a paper mill and set up shop. The factory used waste newspaper and copied a paper from San Francisco scraps and the first-ever paper bags with squared-off bottoms.
