Simeonof National Wildlife Refuge
Simeonof Wilderness can be found in Alaska’s Aleutians East Borough. Simeonof Island, part of the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge, is a traditional sea otter haulout in the Shumagin Island Group. Sea otters can thrive in the abundant marine life of the kelp and eelgrass beds in the tidelands surrounding the island. The island’s upland areas are home to arctic foxes, ground squirrels, river otters, and a wide variety of waterfowl, shorebirds, and passerine bird species.
The restoration of cattle to the island in 1960 resulted in a herd that was too large for the island to support, driving out the few terns and other species that nest there. The last cow was herded out in 1985, and now the local bird population is flourishing again. Simeonof Island is 58 miles from the mainland and is difficult to reach, although it has a well-protected port giving safe mooring.
