Togiak National Wildlife Refuge
Togiak National Wildlife Refuge presents visitors with an ever changing panorama, from the snowy peaks of the Ahklun Mountains in the north to the icy waters of Bristol Bay in the south. Wide spectrums of geologically patient to violently destructive natural forces have shaped this region. While earthquakes and volcanoes left their mark here, many of the refuge’s physical characteristics were shaped by the advance and retreat of glacial glaciers.
48 mammal species are found in the refuge, 31 of which are terrestrial and 17 of which are marine. Refuge areas are used by a wide variety of mammalian species, including about 150,000 caribou from two herds as well as wolves, moose, brown and black bears, wolverines, red foxes, marmots, beavers, porcupines, and many more.
