Whiskeytown National Recreation Area
Whiskeytown National Recreation Area is a scenic outdoor destination in California. Whiskeytown residents spend the hottest, driest part of the year enjoying the lake’s recreational options. Swimming, boating, waterskiing, fishing, and scuba diving are some water sports that may be enjoyed. 36 miles of coastline and 3,200 acres of water make up Whiskeytown Lake. Whiskeytown Lake is one of the few lakes in the area that does not allow personal watercraft, although Shasta and Trinity Lakes do. Many people visit Whiskeytown Lake to go kayaking, swimming, or rowing.
During the summer, you can take advantage of free kayak tours as part of a ranger-led program. On the lake and in the mountains, people can enjoy activities such as photography, bird watching, trail jogging, horseback riding, trail picnics, mountain biking, hiking, and mountain biking, picnicking throughout the year. Whiskeytown also preserves the history of the 1849 Gold Rush in California.
Camping At Whiskeytown National Recreation Area
Oak Bottom RV Campground, Ancient Camps, Brandy Creek Campground, Sheep Camp, Peltier Bridge Campground, Horse Camp, and Crystal Creek Campground are only available in Whiskeytown National Recreation Area. It’s a paradise for campers, with all the beautiful scenery and fun things to do in the great outdoors.
Crystal Creek Campground
You can stay at the Dry Creek Group Campground whenever you choose. Two separate gathering areas may accommodate parties of 20–50 people each or 100 if both areas are reserved. Each contains two tables for serving food and drinks, picnic tables, a huge fire pit, bear-proof storage lockers, and vault toilets. Showers are not available. You must make a reservation to stay at one of these locations.
Crystal Creek Campground
The Crystal Creek Campground is accessible for camping from around April through October. Each of the two campsites has room for four tents, so six people can stay there. The restrooms are a more rustic, vault style. Keep in mind that these tent spots are near the creek. You can plan and secure one of these locations.
Horse Camp
The Horse Camp is accessible at any time of the year. Two group campsites are available, one for horse campers and the other for non-horse campers (first come, first served). Two tents can sleep up to six people at each campsite. Access to flush toilets and drinkable water is provided. You can plan and secure one of these locations.
Peltier Bridge Campground
You can visit the Peltier Bridge Campground whenever you choose. Nine campsites are available, each with room for two tents and a maximum of six people. The restrooms are a more rustic, vault style. Keep in mind that these spots are near the creek. You can plan and secure one of these locations.
Sheep Camp
The Sheep Camp is accessible most of the year except from November through March. The park can accommodate four campers. Every one of them has enough tent space for six people. The restrooms are a more rustic, vault style. Remember that the campsites are close to a cliff leading to the creek. You can plan and secure one of these locations.
Brandy Creek Campground
There are two tent-only sites in Brandy Creek Campground. Two tents can sleep up to six people at each campsite. The restrooms are a more rustic, vault style. Take care, as the road to the campsite is quite steep. You can plan and secure one of these locations.
Ancient Camps
The primitive campsites are located down a gravel road away from the lake. You may get one for a tent or RV up to 25 feet long. The primitive campsites can be reserved up to six months in advance. Each campsite has a maximum capacity of six people. Reservations are required to attend. There are restrooms, showers, fire pits, and picnic tables available. You can plan and secure one of these locations.
