Wood-Tikchik State Park
Wood Tikchik State Park, north of Dillingham in southwest Alaska, is named for its two big interconnected clear-water lakes. To safeguard the subsistence and recreational activities, as well as the fish and animal breeding and support systems, the largest state park in the United States, Wood-Tikchik, was established in 1978.
Wilderness is prioritized for protection, and no new construction is allowed. The park emphasizes “pack it in, pack it out” and low-impact camping. The park is known for its water-based ecosystems and two big, interconnected, pure-water lakes. The Wood River drains the southern lakes into Bristol Bay. Nuyakuk and Nushagak Rivers drain northern Tikchik Lake into Bristol Bay.

Camping At Wood-Tikchik State Park
Camping is allowed everywhere in the park. However, a permit is needed to access some areas of the Upper Tikchik Lakes. A pass is needed to camp and go rafting on Nishlik, Slate, Upnuk, Chikuminuk Lakes, and the Tikchik River. Camping and river-floating permits take a lot of work and cost money. After 10 consecutive days, campers must move at least one mile from their original site within the park. Only fires built in designated fire pits or on designated beaches or gravel bars are permitted.
