Honey Lake Wildlife Area
Honey Lake Wildlife Area is 7,600 acres of Great Basin Desert sagebrush surrounding a tiny lake. Plant life that can withstand alkali borders the banks. This marsh supports tundra swans and other migratory birds. Numerous migrating and breeding ducks, raptors, passerines, sandhill cranes, beavers, pronghorn antelope, and deer can all be spotted here.

The Fleming and Dakin Units are located there. The region is well recognized for its numerous flocks of migratory cranes, swans, and geese. The Honey Lake Wildlife Area is managed by the California Department of Fish and Game and other wildlife management areas about the lake’s northern edge.
The Honey Lake Wildlife Area’s Fleming Unit is the starting point for the circular excursion, 89 miles from the I-80 and US 395 intersections in Reno. At the Fleming Unit, the main office for the Wildlife Area, begin the loop.
Visit the sign-in desk to inquire about birding information. Continue into the facility after registering your vehicle. Retrace your steps to the Fish and Game Road and Mapes Road intersection to leave the Fleming Unit. Turn left into County Road 305/Mapes Road.

Ducks Unlimited and the Duck Stamp Program run by the California Department of Fish and Game contributed financing to the Honey Lake Wildlife Area Upper Pond restoration project, which resulted in its success.
A general topography survey and engineering design plan for the area were completed as the project’s first step by Ducks Unlimited. Using this preliminary planning data, the staff of Wildlife Area and Ducks Unlimited started doing reconnaissance on the area to ensure it had a variety of habitat types for waterfowl.
Small levees and nesting islands were built as part of this project, and the various subunits were given water delivery infrastructure and water control structures. As part of the renovation, a well previously provided water to the site was serviced.
These project elements worked together to restore seasonal wetlands on 50 acres and improve water supply to croplands on 40 acres that are specifically maintained for wildlife. In 2002, the undertaking was finished.
